چکیده

Gravitational waves and X-ray flares are expected from tidal disruption of stars by a massive black hole. Using a relativistic smoothed particle hydrodynamics code, we investigate the fate of main sequence and Helium stars in plunge orbits passing near Schwarzschild or a Kerr black holes of mass ∼ 10M⊙. We show that quadrupole gravitational waves emitted during the tidal disruption process are described reasonable well by a point particle approximation even in the strong encounter case. X-ray flares (∼ 1keV for the disruption of solar-type stars by ∼ 106M⊙ black holes) will be associated with the gravitational wave signal. The hardness of the X-ray flare may serve as a diagnostic of the mass of the black hole involved in the tidal disruption process. Polarized Gravitational Waves from Gamma-Ray Bursts

Significant gravitational wave emission is expected from gamma-ray bursts arising from compact stellar mergers, and possibly also from bursts associated with fast-rotating massive stellar core collapses. These models have in common a high angular rotation rate, and observations provide evidence for jet collimation of the photon emission, with properties depending on the polar angle. Here we con...

Gravitational Waves from Stellar Collapse: Correlations to Explosion Asymmetries

The collapse of massive stars not only produces observable outbursts across the entire electromagnetic spectrum but, for Galactic (or near-Galactic) supernovae, detectable signals for ground-based neutrino and gravitational wave detectors. Gravitational waves and neutrinos provide the only means to study the actual engine behind the optical outbursts: the collapsed stellar core. While the neutr...

A COMPACT BINARY MERGER MODEL FOR THE SHORT, HARD GRB 050509b

The first X–ray afterglow for a short (∼ 30 ms), hard γ–ray burst was detected by Swift on 9 May 2005 (GRB 050509b). No optical or radio counterpart was identified in follow–up observations. The tentative association of the GRB with a nearby giant elliptical galaxy at redshift z = 0.2248 would imply a total energy release Eγ,iso ≈ 3×1048 erg, and that the progenitor had traveled several tens of...

Fragmentation of Collapsar Disks and the Production of Gravitational Waves

We argue that gravitational instability in the outer parts of collapsar disks may lead to fragmentation near the radius where helium photodisintegrates, because of the strong cooling provided by this process. This physics sets clear physical scales for the fragmentation conditions and the properties of gravitationally bound clumps. Collapse of a fragment proceeds until the neutrons become degen...

Event Rate for Extreme Mass Ratio Burst Signals in the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna Band

Stellar mass compact objects in short period (P . 10 s) orbits about a 10–10M⊙ massive black hole (MBH) are thought to be a significant continuous-wave source of gravitational radiation for the ESA/NASA Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) gravitational wave detector. These extreme mass-ratio inspiral sources began in long-period, nearly parabolic orbits that have multiple close encounters...
